An Air Force Orion is currently transporting a seriously injured New Zealand girl home from the Pacific Island nation of Kiribati for medical treatment.

Ten-year-old Morita Bell of Whangarei was injured in a car crash which killed two other people including the vehicle's driver.

The Orion is also carrying another girl who was seriously hurt in the accident.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Emma Rylie says the girls need medical treatment that is not available on Tarawa, the main island of Kiribati, about 2000 km north of Fiji.

She says Morita was in Kiribati on holiday and is being accompanied on the Orion by her mother.

The girl's father will meet the plane when it arrives at the Whenuapai airbase this evening.
