Orion spots fishing boat in trouble

Air Force Orion crew spot fishing boat in trouble off Tonga; rescue easier because the vessel carrying 2 locator beacons

The crew on board a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion has located a fishing boat in trouble off the coast of Tonga with four men on board.

The Orion was dispatched just before eight last night after the boat's emergency beacon was set off and detected.

Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman Ross Henderson says a local vessel is on its way this morning to offer assistance. He says the Orion crew was able to find the fishing boat because it was carrying two varieties of locator beacons, one of which was able to be detected more quickly by satellite.
